Let me be Frank (and yes, you can be Garth…), I am not the biggest fan of Applebee’s (even in high school, I was more a TGI Fridays fan).  These days, I go when the people I am with want to go, but I will never go on my own free will.  Not that it is a terrible place, it’s just not my kind of food (especially since I no longer have the metabolism of a 16 year old).

That said, this past weekend, I found the WBC was down to just me and Jeffrey.  Jeffrey had passed by Applebee’s a couple of times and noticed that they had signs out stating that they now serve breakfast.  He was excited.  However, I was not so thrilled and politely acknowledged his suggestion, while secretly filing it away in the last resort file.

But here we are.  Just me, Jeffrey and my parents (who really like Applebee’s), enjoying breakfast together as a family. At Applebee’s.

The breakfast offerings were too standard and not really varied, like their regular menus.  There were some pancakes, and a few egg/sausage/potato/cheese dish combinations, but nothing really interesting.  Just all high calorie stuff and not a lot of sensible choices to choose from.

I ordered the Whole Wheat Pancakes (which came with fresh fruit on top) with no whipped cream and a side of two eggs sunny side up.  Breakfast comes with free coffee or tea; I chose coffee.

The Whole Wheat Pancakes were surprisingly good.  They were fluffy with well crisped edges.  The berry mixture that was sprinkled on top consisted of fresh strawberries and a mixture of fresh blueberries and what looked to be defrosted frozen blueberries.  I don’t think the maple syrup that came with it was real, but at least it wasn’t served in the plastic containers like at diners.  The eggs were eggs, although a bit undercooked for sunny side up (there was still a pool of uncooked egg white sitting in the center).  The coffee wasn’t bad, and it was potent.  Definitely got the job done.

Service was pleasant and quick.

The czar says:  I was pleasantly surprised by the quality served up by Applebee’s.  It wasn’t as bad as I would have thought.  With this particular branch located within shouting distance of the Executive Diner, it has some pretty stiff competition for breakfast.  At least at the Executive, when I order a veggie omelette, it does not come with ham (what my mom had).  If I ever found myself at a hotel, in the middle of business park central somewhere, and there was an Applebee’s within walking distance, I would hop in for a power breakfast before doing what I needed to get done.  And that would probably be the only time.  It’s good to have choices!

That’s right everyone!  Applebee’s serves breakfast!  I’m not sure if all Applebee’s serve breakfast, but the one in Hawthrone does!  7-12 every day!  Or at least Monday through Saturday.  I have no idea about Sunday.  Also with breakfast, you get free coffee!  Which was rather strong, according to my sister.  I didn’t mind it.  I suppose I’m used to strong coffee after drinking gallons of it at work.

So, what to order at Applebees? Well, I decided to order the whole gambit.  Eggs, homefries, sausage, and pancakes.  I did this because I knew it was only Sylvia and I reviewing the meal and we needed a good sample of all the availabile offereings in order to review it well.  I and my arteries are taking one for the team here.

I have to say, Applebee’s breakfast isn’t awful.  It’s not good, but it’s not awful.  Everything was a little too greasy.  The eggs had a shine on the bottom and the potatoes seemed like they were swimming in oil.  But other then that, the food was edible.  The sausages were the same sausages you could buy at the super market that you just throw in the microwave.

Is it worth going to Applebee’s for breakfast?  Well, you do get unlimited coffee or tea.  The meals are pretty cheap, but greasy. Plus there’s a diner right across the parking lot.  I’m sure you can get better meals there for comparable prices.  Also, the diner probably doesn’t have annoying music blasting all the time. Come to think of it, I probably should have gone to the diner for breakfast. But at least now I can say I’ve had the Applebee’s breakfast experience.
