Having already sampled Ron Black’s and Brazen Fox, the WBC continues its brunch crawl on Mamaroneck Avenue with a visit to Porter House. Does a pub breakfast taste good without a hangover? Well…

Porter House is one of the interchangeable pub-restaurants lining Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. I use the word interchangeable quite deliberately, as the meal I got this morning could have easily come from the kitchens of one of the other neighboring establishments. I opted for scrambled eggs with sausage and wheat toast. As can be expected from a pub brunch, my plate was coated in a thick layer of grease, the main culprit of this being the potatoes. The scrambled eggs were flat and separated, the sausage three shriveled pieces with unpleasantly hard casings, and the toast, well, the toast was barely even toasted. The meal came in just under $10, which is about what should be expected for this kind of breakfast. Maybe it would have tasted better if I’d had a hangover from a pub crawl the night before. But I didn’t, and as a result, this breakfast was entirely forgettable. My take? Skip a pub for brunch, in White Plains head to someplace like City Limits instead.

Here is what I appreciated:  The side of fruit to the Heart Healthy Omelette contained a very generous serving of fresh apples, bananas, strawberries, and blueberries.  None of that cantalope and honeydew nonsense I can’t always eat.

The heart healthy omelette contains mushrooms, spinach, onions, tomatoes, and goat cheese in an egg white omelette.  The portion was great and the omelette well made.  The two slices of toast that came with it (there’s no option, and I didn’t even know it came with toast) were slightly toasted and the slices were huge.  Everything was good, without feeling too heavy or cheesy.

The outdoor seating is in a patio out back by the parking lot.  Not on the sidewalk by Mamaroneck Ave.  Less exhaust to go with breakfast.

Here is what I didn’t appreciate:  1) The coffee service.  It apparently takes forever to get and subsequently refill a cup of coffee.  Plus, for inexplicable reasons, these cups of coffee are served on dishes way too big for it, taking up some valuable table space.

2) The service speed.  While the service itself was generally pleasant and nice, the rate at which service occurred was very very slow.  Something I knew going in, but was hoping would be different during the daylight hours.  It is not.

The czar says:  The third in our Mamaroneck Ave series, despite the slow service, the brunch at Porter House was pretty decent.  The offerings were generally of the same caliber as other establishments, although I felt that there was much more of a lighter variety (as in not doused in grease or cheese) than the Brazen Fox or Ron Black’s.
