After our breakfast at the Lexington Square Cafe, I was not hungry at all for the rest of the day. Does that justify the higher than normal prices for a breakfast? Yes and no. The ambiance, service, food, and portions were all great and fit into the prices they charged for their brunch offerings. But it wasn’t special enough to make me want to come back for a brunch with friends on a random Sunday. I guess, I felt there really was no reason for their dishes to be so expensive (ie farm to table, organic, exotic, iron chef etc), except maybe to compensate for the sheer amount of food presented. Let me explain.

We sat outside under a canopy which was really nice. The weather was beautiful, and we were anxious to enjoy what was left of the warm temperatures until the cruel winter sets in. Upon sitting down, we were immediately presented with a bread basket that consisted of four little pieces of a very yummy banana bread and a few slices of a regular rustic bread that went with the small dish of olive oil that came with it. A brunch bread basket.

After we figured out that the rest of our party was not joining us, we ordered. The tea selection was “extensive” as per our waiter, so I was intrigued. When our drinks came out, my mug full of hot water was anxious for the tea it was to steep for me. I was presented with a handsome wooden box, and in it consisted of maybe 4-5 types of tea bags (not really extensive, but varied). Almost all from Harney and Sons, and one decaf Lipton option. Familiar with the Harney and Sons line of tea, this was the cheap stuff they sold. So, my enthusiasm kind of deflated a bit as I quickly chose the English Breakfast tea. Even though it was the scrap leaves tea bag, it still exuded the English Breakfast Tea flavors I was looking for.

For my meal, I ordered the French Eggs. French Eggs was, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs with chives, home fries, and fresh fruit, and it came with a hollandaise sauce. It isn’t until I am writing this that I realized that I never got the hollandaise sauce. Oh well, it was not missed. My plate arrived, and I was pretty impressed at how much food they can pile onto a plate. Everything was there as promised, with the addition of steamed broccoli. Very healthy! Everything was very yummy. The smoked salmon was good and went well with the eggs. The home fries were cooked and seasoned well, even though it was a bit soft. The broccoli was steamed perfectly, although I still feel it was too random of an addition. It was a lot of food, no toast required!

After stuffing ourselves, we were asked if we wanted to look at the dessert menu. How could I resist! We quickly settled on a Mango au Chocolat, which came with whipped cream and a couple of different sauces I can’t remember. It was artfully presented, and really really good. It was a mango mousse a top a thin layer of chocolate cake, all dipped in a thin layer of chocolate with whipped cream and chocolate shavings and a blackberry on top. This was all placed on top of a trifecta of sauces (one mango, one raspberry, and I think the last was a vanilla) and served with two types of chocolate pieces. It was good.

The czar says: Good if you’re looking for a special occasion brunch with no fancy pants connotations. Good solid food that will appease the non- adventurous eater without boring the more adventurous one.

I lacked my cell phone because my sister rushed me out the door so that we can head north some dozen miles or so to have our breakfast club meeting in Mt. Kisco. Because of this I did not receive the message that Shelley was not joining us. Oh well. We then find out Reid has no intention of joining us due to a miss-communication and his assumption that we were not having a meeting this weekend. Oh well. It turned into a quite brunch with just Sylvia and I.

We walked in and saw a cake counter, which is apparently something else they do. Then we were escorted outside to the patio. It was a very nice day to sit outside and have brunch. The second I saw “Brunch Sampler” on the menu; I knew I needed to have it. So that’s what I had, accompanied by a cup of coffee. The coffee was mediocre, but the coffee service was fantastic. At no point did I actually see the bottom of my cup. The meal, well, let’s say I was full for a while after that. IT WAS HUGE! There was an incredible amount of food. It almost didn’t fit on one plate! There were scrambled eggs, two plump sausages, home fries, steamed broccoli, fruit, a toasted English muffin, and a hefty handful of crispy bacon covering even MORE eggs. Oh… right. There were also 3 SLICES OF HAM! The amount of food was staggering! I wasn’t able to finish all that was on my plate, but I had most of it. We questioned whether the eggs were eggs and not just egg beaters. If they were egg beaters, they were pretty good for egg beaters. The sausages were nice and plump. The bacon was nice and crispy, but almost too crispy. It almost seemed a little dry. Home fries were too amazing! They weren’t just potato pieces tossed around in a pan and baked. They were tossed with onions and other herbs and spices. The meal itself was 14 dollars, which seems steep, but for the amount of food, I was happy. It’s not like I’m going to eat this breakfast every day.

On to dessert! That’s right. Dessert! Our server offered and we had to try something. So we got some sort of mango thing covered in chocolate. It was great! It wasn’t too sweet and the sauce that was around it made me want to lick the plate.

Mt. Kisco has yet to disappoint! It’s 3 for 3 in terms of breakfasts.
